The FDA approved genetically modified Salmon for human consumption on November 19th 2015. The company who will be distributing this salmon is called Aquabounty. They altered the salmons DNA to mimick that of a farm raised Atlantic salmon which will grow in market size faster and only half the time it takes for conventional salmon. The good news is that this salmon won't be making it to our plates for another two years and not all grocery chains will participate in selling this item, such as Whole Foods, Kroger and Trader Joes. After learning of this I will not buy anything that bears the Aquabounty logo or name as I prefer natural un-modified foods.
I'm with you on this one! We try very hard to have food that isn't genetically modified. The problem is that so much food is now days that you don't even realize. Imagine eating Thanksgiving this week and how much of the food is modified...including the turkey.
ReplyDeleteYUCK! I won't be purchasing anything from that brand either! Isn't this how Tyson raises chickens? Pumps them full of steroids in order to mass produce chicken? These practices absolutely horrify me! Glad you posted this.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to pass this one on. Salmon is my mother's ultimate favorite food. Every year for her birthday we will buy salmon and marinate it overnight in a brown sugar marinade then grill it. She could probably eat it like that everyday and never get tired of it. We'll have to watch what we pick up off the shelf in the years to come.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you sara anymore. i didn't know anything about this. Thanks Cline for the update.
