As I was scrolling through my timeline on facebook yesterday, I came upon a video of chickens being prepared in China for consumption by the American people. Now aside of the chickens being prepared elsewhere and then imported into the United states, I found it very troubling to watch the chickens being injected with what I assume to be steroids. I watched the chickens grow from about 3 pounds to guessing 9 in a matter of seconds. I am sure this allows for the grocery stores to gain a profit by charging by the pound, but what about the effects that would have on the human body after consuming this chemical based chicken? One of the comments to the online video stated it is safer to own your own chicken farm and you know after watching the video it doesn't sound like a bad idea or going vegan all together. My only struggle is I love the taste of chicken, but will it love me back in the long run.

This is something that I've started thinking a lot about, too. Of course, no one wants to eat hormone injected meats but running my own chicken farm is a completely different struggle. The saying "running around like a chicken with its head cut off" is a saying for a reason...because it's true! I know for a fact I would not be able to chase a decapitated chicken around the yard and then pluck, dissect and then fry it up and eat it, lol. So I know the closest I'll get to farm raised food is buying directly from a farmer.
ReplyDeleteOkay this was funny, I literally pictured you running around and then I pictured myself so yeah you changed my mind about running a chicken farm... I think if you would have continued with the visual descriptions I would have eventually changed my mind about eating chicken all together. Thanks for the laugh I totally needed it this morning.
DeleteThis is a very real and honestly frightening issue. I don't believe that we have any idea of even half of the substances that are given to the animals we consume. I believe that all food is best natural, the way God made it. I believe that every time we try to modify it, we are inevitably harming ourselves. Ingesting those chemicals and steroids cannot be healthy for us. Personally, I believe that can be correlated to the increased numbers of cancer and other diseases we are facing. Also, as far as raising your own chickens, it may take a little getting used to but it's really not that difficult. My family had chickens for years. We would hatch our own in an incubator and then watch them grow from chicks.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Jamie, this topic is very frightening and it makes you over thing about what it could be doing to your body. I do agree that the side effects of what is being placed into our foods and how they are grown has a direct link to the increase in multiple health conditions. Stay tuned to my blog as I plan to explore lots more on this topic!
DeleteYou have brought up a great issue and I think this is why local or sourced food is becoming more important. People want to know who the farmer is and what they are doing if they can't spent their day running around after chickens :)
ReplyDeleteYes I agree people are becoming a lot more inquisitive on what is going on during the growing and preparation process of their food, and for good reason. Whenever I am on a road trip I always look at the cattle or live stock during passing and wonder the same thing myself.
DeleteI myself Love chicken cooked away but the question is what type of steroids are the chickens being injected with? We will probably never know and even if they were to disclose that information we wouldn't know if its the truth, I tried going vegan for 12 days and I felt the BEST I have EVER Felt in my LIFE!! I had so much energy and I slept even better than I usually do.
ReplyDeleteYou will have to give me more detail on the vegan experience I have seriously contemplated it, but in my mind if I tell myself I have to do something, especially when it is relating to food, I want to do the complete opposite.
